Food and Energy
Thanksgiving Turkey and Energy
Thanksgiving made me
think of Turkey recipes and food in general.
I thank the supreme energy for one think
above all.
Thank you for not letting me be a Turkey on
this thanksgiving day.
Is there any relationship between food and
energy?
Of course at a physical level, you know food
is converted into energy for the body to use and function
properly. At a higher level too the type of food we eat
contributes to the type of thoughts we have and the way our
mind works.
In India we say "Aahar cannot be without
Samhaar. But we should choose such an Aahar that involves the
minimum amount of Samhaar".
Ahar or Aahar means
food.
Samhaar means annihilation
or destruction.
If I want to eat bread, wheat has to be
crushed into flour and that flour has to go through further
process of destruction before it takes the form of a food item
that I can digest.
No one can eat without this
annihilation.
But what do we mean by
minimum amount of annihilation?
The higher we move in consciousness, the
more we are affected by what happens to us. An animal has a
more awakened consciousness than a vegetable and human being as
the superior animal has a consciousness that can extend beyond
the world.
If I cut a tree, as a living being, it will
suffer a little. If I cut an animal, the suffering will be felt
more. If I kill an human being, I hurt not only the person but
a whole lot of others associated with him as well as myself.
(Why myself? If you believe every action has an equal and
opposite reaction, you will surely know that by killing him I
have hired someone to murder me in this birth or the next
one.)
The suffering of the tree is less compared
to the suffering of the animal. So by eating vegetarian food we
are not completely free of annihilation but we have reduced the
impact of our action by inflicting it on a less conscious
being.
We cannot live without food and we have to
eat to sustain this body. But we have to choose such food that
involves less destruction at a higher consciousness level.
Food habits are developed right from
childhood. Had I been born in a family where non-vegetarian
food was fed to me right from childhood, I would have preferred
that later in life too.
In many families it is
believed that children cannot be healthy without eating meat.
But a large number of vegetarian recipes have all the required
nutrients for a balanced diet minus the fat content of the
non-veg recipes.
One part of the food we eat goes to our mind
and influences our thoughts. Non vegetarian food makes our mind
restless and is not suitable for people who practice
meditation.
Whichever animal we kill and eat, the
tendencies of that animal are inherent in the flesh of that
animal. So by eating that animal, we are influencing our mind
to have similar tendencies.
Besides every action has an equal and
opposite reaction. So I believe that I would be at the
receiving end one day, if I kill an animal today.
These thoughts may sound crazy to you. Just
write to me and tell me to go to hell
:)
