Biting indiscriminately is an irritating and harmful habit of some dogs.  It is important that the dogs are rid of this habit when they are puppies, in order to avoid untoward accidents.

Puppies, as we all know, tend to bite a lot when they are teething.  However if this habit sticks on to the dog as he grows older there could be several reasons for it.

Dogs get unduly snappy when

  • In heat
  • In pain
  • In trauma
  • When abused

There are some simple ways that may work with some dogs, in order to prevent them from biting

1. Fill pebbles in  an empty soda can and keep it ready.  Whenever the dog bites or nips for no reason at all, shake the can vigorously in his vicinity. say a firm “No” while you shake the can, making your disapproval obvious.  Do so whenever he bites.  The loud sound and your disapproval could help dissuade him from the habit.

2. Give him exceptional, interesting and safe chew toys that can distract him from biting.  You will need to be consistently patient and persuade him to play with these toys.

3. In spite of all these efforts, if your dog still has a strong urge to bite and injure then you will need to muzzle him

4. If the dog’s biting habit stays with him even when he is a year old then consult the vet for the same. You may want to consider a professional trainer’s help for the same.

Whatever the severity of the problem, you can help your dog improve behavior by including a lot of positive reinforcements and encouragement whenever you deal with or address him.

Identify why your dog has the behavioral problem. Take a firm and effective step to prevent his misdemeanors every time it occurs.

You should also remember that the dog can be corrected only at the instance  of his misbehavior, firmly.  Not later… Dogs do not remember and associate your reprimand for something he did earlier.  Your delayed disapproval and scolding will only tend to make him confused, frightened/angry and belligerent.

What hypothyroidism means for dogs

June 23rd, 2008 · Add Comments

 What it hypothyroidism?

The thyroid gland secretes hormones called triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).  These  are significantly responsible for the total metabolism of the body.

Abnormal secretion from the thyroid gland changes the rate of metabolism.  Dogs with low metabolism rate tend to put on excess weight even when on normal diet. This is hypothyroidism.  the dog breeds that are generally known to be more susceptible to this abnormality are havanese dogs, Golden Retrievers, Boxers,  Dachshunds, Doberman Pinschers, Labradors and Cocker Spaniels.

What are the symptoms?

  • Irritability
  • Increased  bowel movement
  • Hair loss
  • Depressed mental functions
  • Skin problems
  • Ear canal Infection
  • Lethargic behavior
  • heart rate not normal - may be lower or higher than the average
  • Inability to withstand heat or cold
  • Unwarranted nervousness

How is Hypothyroidism diagnosed and treated?

Blood tests can diagnose hypothyroidism. The problem can be managed effectively, with drugs (thyroxin) administered once or twice a day.  The treatment usually persists through the span of the dog’s life.  Also, there are no preventive measures for this disorder.

4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SPAYING AND NEUTERING

June 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

 What it is

Ovario-hysterectomy is called spaying.  It is the surgical removal of the reproductive organs of the female dog.  The uterus, fallopian tubes and the ovaries form the reproductive organs.

Castration (or orchectomy), the removal of the male reproductive organ (testes) of the dog, is called neutering.  The operation is performed with the animal placed under general anesthesia.

 When is it done?

The American Medical Veterinary Association recommends early neutering and spaying.  The earliest it can be done for healthy pups is anytime after they are 7 weeks old. This policy has helped reduce the number of unwanted litters, though overpopulation is still a problem.

What is the cost of the sterilization?

Sterilization costs from $75 to $250.  There are many low cost surgical clinics all over the country.  Veterinarians offer discounts too.

Spay/USA is a program of The Pet Savers Foundation.  It is a nation wide network and a referral service for affordable spay/neuter services.  You can contact their phone counselors at 1-800-248-7729.  Counselors work Monday through Friday from 9am to 4.30 pm.

What are the benefits?

  •  Female dogs are less susceptible to breast cancer and reproductive tract cancers (50% of bitches which are not spayed develop breast cancer)
  • They are less susceptible to urinary tract infections
  • Male dogs are less susceptible to testes cancer
  • All sterilized dogs are less likely to display irritation and aggression
  • License fees for sterilized dogs are 50% less
  • The dogs find a lessened interest in roaming
  • The animals are of pleasant temperament and remain active, they tend not to be lazy
  • Sterilization increases the life span of dogs and they lead healthy lives
  • It does not reduce the stamina or positive traits in a dog, nor does it have any harmful after effec

                                                         What is AB1364?

It is a Bill mooted as a solution to combat the overpopulation of pets in the state of California.

As more than 500,000 dogs and cats are euthanized each year to combat overpopulation, the bill requests pets that are not used for law enforcement or breeding, be sterilized, by the families that own them.

It is believed that about $250million is spent on this euthanization, out of the taxpayers’ money!  Sterilization is thus a humane way to control the overpopulation and cut government costs on euthanization.

Of course there are exemptions for show dogs, police dogs, working dogs, dogs too old to be treated and breeding dogs.  Family pets are also allowed one litter, if the family so desires.

However, it is also indicated that

  • Lack of compliance to the Bill will not lead to arrest of citizens
  • Animal welfare agencies will not enter private homes to write citations and
  • Pets will not be confiscated by law enforcement agencies for non compliance.

Keeping this in perspective, this site welcomes your views on the issue.   All feedback will be posted on this site.

To save dogs in danger it would be nice if you adopt rather than buy dogs.  Have a look ”Dogs in Danger” to know more about this.

4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AGING DOGS

May 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Age catches up with every living being… With it come many  health problems. Thankfully, geriatric dog care has made remarkable progress.  So caring for your pet when he gets on in life has become easier.

Dogs become susceptible to certain ailments, as they advance in years.  Here is how you manage them.

Arthritis

Stiffness is the first symptom of arthritis.  Also the dog may be sore after a good snooze.. watch out for that.  After some time a limp may set in, when he will need your help to climb into the car and also within the house.

Management:

  •  Keep un-carpetted floors covered with mats or rugs so he does not slip
  •  Trim his nails regularly
  • Give him anti inflammatory pills prescribed by the vet to manage pain and discomfort
  •  Include supplements of anti oxidant, vitamins and glucosamine, in the daily diet, as the vet prescribes.

Hearing problems

A dog loses sensitivity to high notes and other tones, in old age. Auditory tests by the vet will tell you the extent of the dog’s hearing problem.

Management:

  • Use a touch and sign language to make him understand you
  • Do not approach him from behind.  he will be shocked to see you materialize suddenly and these shocks are not good for his heart
  • Do not disturb him unduly while he is asleep

Vision problems: Failing sight is a common problem for aging dogs.  Eyes lose retinal cells, and the retina is disorganized.  The lenses lose focus.  The problem progresses slowly.

Management: When the slow deterioration of sight cannot be cured by treatment or medication this is how you manage the situation.

  • Remove objects in his path to avoid his fall
  • Allot a place for food and water bowls and the crate and keep them there always, so he can reach them without much effort
  • Always make a sound to tell him you are coming to his side.   If you approach him suddenly he may attack you in fear.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CCDS):

This is something similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans.  There is disorientation in behavior, due to inefficient transfer of messages from the brain. The dog may not recognize you, he barks at the plants and other inanimate objects, and may be indifferent to your affection.

Management:A drug called Selegiline, is believed to help the dog live longer, and sometimes reverses symptoms to a slight extent.  It has to be given as long as the dog lives.  The vet will help and guide you in this regard.

For you, it is a rewarding experience to care for your aging friend who has never left your side all these years, come what may.  The rewards are the shine in his adoring eyes and a wag in his tail…
